a generation seeking connection

Generation Z is the group of individuals born between 1995ish-2012ish. Despite being one of the most accepting and connected generations, Generation Z is also considered the loneliest generation.

Gen Z desires deep and meaningful friendships which are often hard to find in the sea of potential that exist in front of them 24/7. And while social media use alone is not a predictor of loneliness, it often doesn't allow the emotional closeness that an in person interaction can offer.

Easy fix right? Stop social media and continue to hang out in person. It's not like a global panorama or feeling left out when all your friends are using TikTok references will interfere with that plan right? 😝

Finding the balance in remaining connected online while also promoting emotional connections is key to combating the loneliness Gen Z is facing. When the desire to have emotional connection is there, there is also fear of rejection, failed expectations, and overwhelming feelings of worry surrounding the vulnerability required to show your authentic self. Reaching out to and connecting with individuals threatens the perception of safety, thus triggering anxiety responses in the body.

Developing social, communication, and conflict resolution skills in session can give these individuals the confidence needed to feel safe and connected with those around them. It has been reported that Gen Z desires skill based approaches so they feel as though they are walking away with concrete ways to cope with their heightened anxious state.

The American Psychological association noted that gen z was 27% more likely to report their mental health as poor with only 41% of gen z reporting "good" mental health. 91% of individuals in Gen Z experience at least one symptom that is directly related to stress. So, if you fall into the category of Gen Z (1995ish-2012ish) know that this isn't something you are facing alone. Authentic connections and confidence are the perfect goals to start your therapeutic journey!
