The weight of a glass of water

“If you hold the glass of water for a minute, it's not a problem. If you hold it for an hour, your arm will begin to ache. If you hold it for a day, your arm will feel numb and paralized. In each case, the weight of the glass doesn't change but, the longer you hold it, the heavier it becomes."- Mike Margolies

In this analogy, a glass of water is used to symbolize the stress and worry we carry. Oftentimes we don't recognize the impact that the weight has on our lives until someone brings our attention to it.

Mental Health screeners serve as a good starting point for knowledge, awareness, and ultimately, conversations around the commonly challenging topics of depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues.

This year, October 7th is National Depression Screening Day. Below is the Mental Health America screening tool for Depression.

SCREENINGS ARE NOT A PROFESSIONAL DIAGNOSIS.

If you are experiencing 5 or more of the symptoms listed below for longer than two weeks or they interfere with your daily life, you should reach out to a Licensed Mental Health Professional or your Doctor for further evaluation.

  • persistent sad mood

  • sleeping too little/too much

  • reduced/increased appetite

  • loss of interest/pleasure in previously enjoyed daily activities

  • restlessness/irritability

  • difficulty concentrating/remembering

  • fatigue/loss of energy

  • thoughts of death/suicide

Whatever struggle fills up your glass, you don’t have to hold it alone.
